Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the acquisition of DuckLabs, the Amsterdam-based company behind the successful open-source database DuckDB. The financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed. DuckDB will remain open source and under the independent management of the DuckDB Foundation.
DuckDB originated at the Centre for Mathematics and Computer Science (CWI) at the Science Park in Amsterdam and is considered one of the most successful Dutch deep-tech spin-offs of recent years. According to various media reports, an acquisition by European parties was also considered prior to the deal, but ultimately an agreement within Europe proved unfeasible, and DuckLabs opted to join AWS.
The acquisition underscores the strategic value of DuckDB, which is rapidly gaining popularity worldwide as a lightweight analytical database for modern data and AI applications.
