Horizon Europe, the successor to Horizon 2020, is the European funding programme for increasing European competitiveness through science and innovation, with approximately €97 billion for seven years. In addition, the funding programme aims to work on solutions for societal issues such as health and well-being for all, a digital economy, solutions for climate change, the transition to a circular economy, and the food problem. All of this should also lead to a strong European industrial sector and increased employment.
The structure of Horizon Europe is similar to the pillar structure of Horizon 2020. The program consists of three pillars and several horizontal actions. New to Horizon Europe are the missions. Through these missions, funding can be received for projects that contribute to solving specific societal challenges, such as the fight against cancer and climate change.
The 3 pillars are:
The program is open to SMEs as well as universities. Many projects involve collaboration with multiple (international) parties on the one hand, and align with public-private partnerships on the other.
Horizon Europe is divided into annual budgets and topic-based budgets by project type. Calls for proposals are issued for submitting an application. The specific conditions are explained in these calls.
Individual innovative (SME) enterprises are primarily served in Horizon Europe by the EIC, the European Innovation Council. The EIC will primarily consist of two components:
The Pathfinder for innovations with a low technology readiness level (TRL)
The Accelerator for innovations with a high TRL . Opportunities are offered to combine various forms of financing, including equity investment.
A project application can be submitted at any time of the year for calls that are open at that moment.
