HORIZON 2020

Horizon 2020 (H2020) is the European Framework Programme for Research and Development. With about € 80 billion of subsidy for 7 years it is the biggest European subsidy programme for stimulating R&D in Europe. In addition, H2020 subsidy program aims to work on solutions to social issues such as climate change, aging, food safety, and affordable sustainable energy.

Horizon 2020 subsidizes R&D processes with international partners in cooperation with various member states (1 or more) within the EU. Cooperation must be carried out with at least 3 partners. The Horizon 2020 portal has a partner "search" function.

Pillars of Horizon 2020

The Horizon 2020 program consists of 3 pillars: 

  • Excellent Science: the goal is to ensure Europe produces world-class science and make Europe an attractive location for the best researchers.
  • industrial leadership: goal is to stimulate companies to invest in R&D within Europe.
  • Societal challenges: goal is to make it easier for public and private sectors to work together on devlivering innovation for societal challenges.

The programme is open for SMEs up to universities. Supporting collaborations between multiple (international) parties and connections between public / private collaboration. Horizon 2020 is divided into budgets per year and budgets per subject per type of project. Calls for proposals are issued for submitting an application. The conditions are explained in these calls.

SME and Horizon 2020

Companies can apply for the SME instrument within the H2020 program. A project application can be submitted for R&D / demonstration. A subsidy can be obtained for developing a product, process or service ready for the market. The subsidy for such projects is between € 500,000 and € 2.5 million. The duration of these projects is between 12 and 24 months.

Participate in Horizon 2020

A project application can be submitted at any time of the year. The SME instrument has 4 closing dates per year. A project proposal may be submitted no more than once per closing date. This can be done individually or together with other SMEs.

The closingdates for Horizon 2020-calls in 2020 SME are: 
8 January 2020, 18 March 2020, 19 May 2020, 7 October 2020
